Visiting and Events

The Cathedral is usually open daily from 7.30am to 6.15pm Monday to Saturday, and 7.30am to 5.00pm on Sunday.

Please note that the Cathedral is regularly used for a variety of public and private events which may not be highlighted in the website diary. 

If you are making a special trip to visit Carlisle Cathedral please call 01228 548151 (office) or 01228 535169 (vergers) to check that you will be able to access the area(s) of particular interest to you.

Museum Shop Sunday

Join Carlisle Cathedral to celebrate Museum Shop Sunday on 25 November, 12 - 2.30pm. This is first of our special Sunday lunchtime Christmas openings, up to and including Sunday 16 December. Come along and find that perfect gift!

Tommy returns to the Cathedral

The silhouette of a First World War soldier will again be in the Cathedral to mark the last weeks of the commemoration of the Great War. Visitors are being invited to light a candle in memory of anyone who has suffered through conflict and war.

Grants from the Friends of Cathedral Music

7 October 2018: We were delighted to welcome Peter Smith, from the Friends of Cathedral Music, to present two grants which will help pay for music lessons for the choristers and support the cost of the organ scholarship.

During the poppy installation at the Castle, the Cathedral is hosting a special exhibition by Robin Oliver. There is also a prayer space where candles can be lit and names of those who have died in conflict can be remembered. Click for further details.

Cathedral bell ringers receive prestigious award

The bell ringers have just received an award recognising their 'Effective Use of Technology in Teaching' by the Association of Ringing Teachers. Stephanie Warboys, the National Coordinator came to present the award on Sunday 8 April at the Eucharist.

Between 11 - 16 December we are saying ‘thanks’ to people who have raised money for good causes by buying a lottery ticket. The Cathedral Cafe will be offering a free mince pie with purchased hot drink on presentation of a lottery ticket. Ts & Cs apply.

New Director of Music

Carlisle Cathedral has received a confirmed grant of £1,918,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for The Fratry Project.

South Porch receives award

The work done on the restoration of the South Porch in 2015 has been recognised in the Natural Stone Awards 2016.  The Renewal of the South Porch won the Craftmanship category.
