Master of the Music
Jeremy Suter has been Master of the Music since 1991. Before that he held appointments at All Saints', Northampton and Chichester Cathedral. He received his musical training at Oxford University, the Royal College of Music and at the University of Pennsylvania.
Under Jeremy’s direction as Master of the Music the reputation of the Cathedral Choir has been enhanced and extended through broadcasts, choir tours and CDs. In 1997 the Cathedral Youth Choir was founded at his initiative and in 2006 the Cathedral Girls’ Choir was established. Boys’ Choir and Girls’ Choir now share the regular weekly pattern of services between them, joining forces for festival days and some special services.
In recognition of his work at Carlisle Cathedral he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Guild of Church Musicians in 2009 and an Associateship of the Royal School of Church Music in 2010.
In addition to his Cathedral duties Jeremy is active in local music making, notably through the Royal School of Church Music and the Cumbrian Society of Organists. He is also an advisor for the Scottish Churches Organists’ Training Scheme and for ten years was Director of the Abbey Singers. Jeremy helped to establish the Carlisle Summer Music Festival, held in July each year, and is its Musical Director.
Edward Taylor has been Assistant Organist at Carlisle Cathedral since 2008, previously holding posts as Organ scholar at Ely Cathedral, Leeds Parish Church, Wakefield Cathedral and Portsmouth Cathedral over a period of 7 years. Alongside his current position, Edward directs the Cathedral Youth Choir and Cantate Children’s Choir. He also plays a major role in the cathedrals Outreach scheme in local primary schools. Edward is in demand both as a solo recitalist and also as an accompanist and plays regularly for local choirs in this latter role. In his spare time Edward enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, walking in the Lakes and playing snooker and squash. His ambition is to one day gain his private pilot’s licence.
This post is currently held by Jack Stone.
The organ scholarship is jointly funded by the Friends of Cathedral Music, The Pilling Trust and the Ouseley Trust.
Choral scholarships are available each year. Enquiries for the year beginning September 2016 should be addressed to the Master of the Music (email@example.com)
