The Friends of Carlisle Cathedral

The Friends of Carlisle Cathedral

The Friends of Carlisle Cathedral was founded in 1934 to assist the Dean and Chapter in maintaining and restoring this ancient place of worship. In doing this they stand in the great tradition of those who have served this place down nine centuries.

The Friends make regular and valued financial contributions to both the music and the mission work of the Cathedral. In addition to these, in recent years the Friends have led the funding for many significant Cathedral projects. Most notable has been their major contribution to the complete renewal of the electrical wiring and lighting system in the Cathedral. This project was tackled in three stages over a period of eight years. Phase 1 saw lighting for the sanctuary, presbytery and stalls installed at clerestory level. Phase 2 saw the design and installation of four chandeliers to light the Nave and Crossing. Phase 3 in 2012 saw LED lighting units installed on the column capitals to light the north and south choir aisles.

The Friends have also committed funds to the Fratry Project: Bringing untold stories to life.
