Connect

Connect is the ‘umbrella’ organisation for all sorts of Mission work from the Cathedral. Led by the Canon Missioner, Connect brings together a wide range of events and projects.

The Lodge – Mission Base

The Lodge is a small house on Castle Street, right at the entrance to the Cathedral grounds. Used formerly as a bookshop, it is now used as a mission and community base to connect with the City.

Various groups use the Lodge which has a kitchen area and toilet downstairs and a separate Upper Room above.

The Cathedral sees the Lodge as a vital bridge, both welcoming people into the grounds, and reaching out to the City and County. It can be hired at very competitive rates for one, two, four, or eight hour periods.

Interpretation

Part of any Mission agenda is making connections between everyday life and God. Interpretation is the art of revealing God’s presence ‘in the world’ and the importance of ‘the everyday’ to the Christian community.

The phrase often used to describe this process is ‘double listening’: where you try and identify what the communities around you are saying and valuing; whilst trying to discern what God might be saying around and within them.

In a society that has lost much of its religious language, or continually re-interprets their meaning, a key task of mission is to present the Christian faith using symbols and words that today’s enquirer can understand.

Within the grounds and the Cathedral itself, there are panels or displays seeking to tell the story and values of this place, both historically and spiritually.

Projects

In a rapidly changing world, mission needs to evolve alongside it. The Cathedral is therefore engaged in several projects; some running constantly, others emerging and fading as need demands.

Current projects include:

  • The Lodge - A community and mission resource on the main street outside the Cathedral.
     
  • Shekinah - A small group that meets periodically to explore and plan Pilgrim Trails and opportunities to engage visitors and members spiritually in the Cathedral.
     
  • Café Connect is a monthly meeting for fellowship and outreach based at the Lodge. We offer food, with a range of activities. Partnering with Methodists@thetithebarn, various aspects of life are explored with Christian input. The fellowship is all age, and anyone is welcome to drop in. occasionally, Café Connect evolves into an evangelistic event, going out into the city centre to invite the public back for free drinks and conversation.
     
  • Fests are ecumenical festivals embracing all-age activities, worship and evangelism. The largest is in the summer, and is known as Spiritfest, where with picnics, jesters, music and games; the Cathedral grounds are transformed for a day.
