Details

As part of the national programme of events for Heritage Open Day, come and visit the Prior's Tower,  the Fratry and the bell tower at Carlisle Cathedral.

Heritage Open Day weekend

Saturday 9 September        10 - 4pm         (Prior’s Tower, Fratry and Bell Tower)

Come and visit two of Carlisle's hidden gems- the Prior's Tower with its Tudor painted ceiling, and the medieval Fratry building. The bell tower is also open on Saturday for guided tours.

The Fratry will be hosting an exhibition entitled 'The library of Canon Henry Hutton'. In the turbulent Civil War and Commonwealth periods (1642-1660), Carlisle Cathedral suffered substantial losses of its buildings and possessions, including its historic library. The donation of Canon Henry Hutton's books in 1691 established the Cathedral's new library. The exhibition tells this story.
