Maundy Thursday - Sung Eucharist and Maundy Ceremonies and Watch of the Passion

@ Carlisle Cathedral

Sung by the Cathedral Choir. Preacher: Canon Cameron Butland, Bishop’s Chaplain and Diocesan Spirituality Adviser

The day gets its name from the new command Jesus gives his disciples to love one another. We remember the Last Supper when Jesus gathered his disciples around him and told them to break the bread and share the cup of wine “in memory of me”. The Eucharist is celebrated at 7.30pm.

At the end of the service, the mood changes. From 9.00pm A Watch of Prayer is held in the Regimental Chapel. We try to imagine what it was like in the Garden of Gesthemane when Jesus prays to his heavenly Father and commits himself to do his Father’s will – whatever the cost. People can come and go during the silent Watch of Prayer which goes on until midnight.
